Wow! Awesome pens. What is your secret to a fine finish like that? Try as I might, I can't get mine shiney like that. Beautiful workmanship.

Thank you Rich,

These are all plain CA finish (about 3 coats of thick), sanded to 600 grit then polished with 7 sheet course of micromesh. Can't recall the finest grit :D . Then waxed with RenWax and/or TSW.

Note that not all wood behave the same. Just last night I was working with an American Chestnut burl and can't seem to get it right. I gave up after trying 3 times re-sanding to bare wood. Barrel is still on the lathe waiting...

Wish I can help you more.

Nice to see familiar "faces".

Hey Dario,
Those pens look as good here as they do over at that other place. How's that chestnit coming along. If you need another piece let me know. I got some from the same source so I can now return the generosity you showed me. I've not had a chance to turn the 2 you sent me. Maybe this weekend. Brian

Excellent pens, Dario. I'm guessing it's safe to assume you're not a beginner at this, huh? :p

Brian,

I tried turning one Chestnut last night but can't seem to get the finish right. After applying and re-sanding 3 layers of CA I gave up! Not sure if it was that 90+ degree temp in the shop but, I'll try again tonight. Talk about major disappointment (sweating through the heat and not get anything completed)

If it won't take...I'll use lacquer instead :D

Thanks but I have enough, bought another small piece from him...about $50.00 total and not sure if I can get 10 blanks out of it...very irregular.

Did you ever got a copy of the wood certification? I asked him but gave me something else...a forum thread printout

Dario,
I did get a leter that said it was certified to be American Chestnut. When I get to the office tomorrow(that's where it's at) I can fax you a copy. Or I can scan it and email it to you. I'll also make a copy and drop it in the mail. One of the blanks may be big enough for me to make my mom a bowl with. I'll have to study the blank before I start cutting that much away though. I just got the package in today. Same here with the heat. Dew Point over 72 and Humidity around 80%. No shop time here until it drops some. :(
