A cabinet maker friend of mine gave me a 8' piece of what he is calling curly red oak..... It does have some flecks on the side and open capillaries like red oak does but I am doubting that it is in fact oak.....
Can anyone confirm what this actually is?

Chris,

Looks like Curly Oak to me. I've used quite a bit of that in furniture. Here's a table made mostly from it:

42516

I've always used some form of oil finish on it, since it seems to accentuate the wild grain.

Chris,

On the back cover of this month's Woodwork magazine is a photograph of beautiful curly oak breakfront made by Hank Gilpin. It looks very much like the wood in your photographs.

Just about any species can be "curly" given the right conditions. I agree...it looks like curly oak to me, too. This is not as common, but wonderful stuff!

Chris,
I did a weather station a while back with a bit of curly oak I found at the Borg. I resawed it to get the most out of it. The grain was really wild and took a bit of finesse to plane and work without tearout.
Looks like a nice piece - have fun with it!

Thanks to all for confirming what I have is curly oak.....
I only have one 3" x 96" piece, but it is very consistant.....
Now all I have to do is figure out a nice small project to use it on.....
