Anyone have a suggestion on a book or two on finishing that's a good start for a beginner? I've been looked through the Guide to Finishing by Jewitt, from the local library, but it didn't seem indepth enough for a beginner, plenty of how's, not enough why's.

I've been thinking about picking up these from Amazon,

Any thoughts on these, or other suggestions?

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott: I've got both books in my library and suggest that you can't go wrong with either. Flexner is a recognized expert in the field and I have great confidence in the Taunton books.

There is course is quite a bit of overlap between the two but always a tip or technique unique to each.

Enjoy. Tom

Taunton has 3 dvds on finishing if that would be of interest. I have not seen any of them as of yet, but have been very happy with the other taunton dvds that I have seen.

Flexner's book and "Great Wood Finishes" by Jeff Jewitt really started me on the road to progress from wipe on oil finishes that most of us WWers start with. I haven't read Jeff's newer book. Also, Michael Dresdner has some good info out there as well.

Scott, get a copy of "Taunton's Complete Illistrated Guide to Finishing" (http://www.taunton.com/store/pages/070712.asp) written by Jeff Jewitt with many many color photos by Jeff's wife. I have been slowly plowing through it this summer. If you only buy one finishing book, this is the one to buy. It takes you from finishing tools, surface prep, staining, filling, sealers, Glazes, toners, evaporative finishes, curing finishes, up through rubbing out. It explains the terms and the differnt finishes along with the pros and cons.

Know what a pre catalized varnish is?
Know what a catalized varnish is?
Know what a CAB lacquer is?
Know the difference between a glaze and a toner?
Kow when to use a pigment stain or a dye?

You will when you complete the 304 page book.

Buy it from Homestead Finishing, and Jeff will autograph it.

Yep, this is the first book I got. I continue to read it and discover new things the more advanced I get. It does not break down the how to's, but it more than compensates in the variety of finishes available. It is a great book, certainly worth $20 on Amazon.

Alright, I may have to back and pick it back up, give it a second review. Admittedly, the first time I read through it, I was looking for something he didn't specifically cover, except briefly.

Thanks
