I made a Hollowing rig with Travis's and Jim K.'s help and used it on this pear HF, after getting beat to death using Sorby's Hollowmaster to rough out the inside. You can see I still need some practice using it. This was going to be a vase/bowl until I saw the way it was starting to look. The grain/heartwood looks pretty cool, at Dicks Parr-B-Q we figured it had to be a graft to get it like that. I haven't seen a form like this and would like honest opinions on it.

Thanks,

Joe, you did a great job on this!!!!! I knew it was a special piece of wood when you showed it to us at Dick's! It's a different form, and I like it! This is a keeper!

Joe..........First off I like the form, the wood,....everything about it! And yes....if you want us to help provide an excuse to turn another......Yeah....you need more practice! And Michael Jordan needed more practice from the freethrow line! :D

No, I really can't. Looks good Joe. I'm not partial to sharp transitions in bowls, but I can see where you sure needed to show as much of that wood as possible, and you did what you needed to to get it therre.

I don't know, Joe. I'm not sure you should PRACTICE on another piece of that wood. It would be better if I PRACTICED with it. I NEED the practice!

There's a lot going on with that wood, Joe. A unique form coupled with a unique chunk of wood has resulted in an absolute beauty.

BTW: I couldn't tell by the photos if this piece had any finish on it yet. If it has, what is the finish?

It has 1 coat of Rockler Gel Poly on it....gonna get another soon.

I wasn't kidding about needing more practice.....it's pretty smooth, but you can tell. Getting used to the laser is the thing that's getting me.

That is defiantly is a freak of nature or a graft line that goes around that HF you just don't find wood with separate grain with hartwood and sapwood that is separated by a line otherwise!
Defiantly one awesome piece of wood!
