5.5x5.5... A pecan tree fell over and had this attached to one of the roots. I was going to fold the top over and put a collar on it, but it was so punky that the hole kept caving i, so I changed directions and flared it out. I was really surprised it stayed together as the inside just crumbled instead of cutting. When about 1/2" thick I poured about a quarter cup of wood hardener in it, and rolled it around and took it on down to about 3/16" so the bark inclusion would be a hole through. The burl is only around the bark and on the other side you can see where there is some spalting. Finished with lacquer. Thanks for looking.

Earnie like you we have lots of pecan in Georgia, but I have never seen a burl on a pecan root. It might be because I have never looked, but after seeing this beaut I will be looking after the next tornado or hurricane. Thanks for showing me the way to another nice piece of wood.

WOW! sure doesn't look like it did laying on the ground, at least if it is what I think it is. Great work!:)

Ernie, how about taking a picture of another one on the ground when it is still attached to the tree. I would like to be able to recognize it. That picture would be very helpful.

Glenn, I sure will if I run across another one. This tree had some problems so this my not happen often. If you saw this you'd know it right off because it looked like a ball with bark on it with a 1 1/2" diameter root running through it. It sort of makes your eyes pop out when they run across it... kinda like that tree you were hugging... well, maybe not quite that eye popping.:D

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.

That's a great piece, Ernie. Did you have much problem with rock and/or sand inclusions?
