Several months ago I was asking questions about attaching legs to a pedestal table and got great feedback from Jamie Buxton (and others) about using sliding dovetails. I took their advice and have ended up with some solid construction as a result. My daughter is getting married on 7/15 and I have been working on this table non stop lately. A brief description of the table:
Curly English Sycamore veneer center panel, ebony octagon inlay in center, ebony inlay on border and ebony splines at octagon corners and ebony caps on top of legs where they meet the pedestal. The ebony caps were a fix (that turned out as a touch that I liked) for some tearout when I was routing the dovetails(male part) on the legs. The underside veneer on the table top is curly Aniegre.
The remainder of the table (top frame, spindle, legs) are from Honduran Mahogany. The mahogany has some gorgeous figure. My pictures are not so great (any tips are welcome). The figure of the mahogany reflect the light so much it gives an orange hue to the mahogany that is not the actual look of the table. Some of the pictures are a little dark, but that was the only way that I could get the true color of the wood.
Anyway, I am a proud Dad that is giving away his only daughter in 11 days. Fortunately, as I said in a thread that Mark Singer started a week or so ago , I like my soon to be son-in-law very much.
Any comments on the table (critical or otherwise) are welcome. I am enjoying woodworking more and more as I go off in some new direction that I haven't tried before. One thing that helps alot is the wonderful advice that is available here at Sawmill Creek. I can always get good answers and ideas from the members here.

Jim,

That turned out wonderful, a gift that will cherished beyond our days. I didn't see what type of finish you used?

Once again fine work.

Great table. Your daughter and son-in-law will love it. I also like the ebony "patch" on the top of the legs. Everything goes well together. Nice look.

Kyle,
The finish is: 1st coat - Watco oil, then sealed it with Shellac, then more coats of spray can lacquer than I want to remember (probably 12-15). All Gloss coats until last coat, that was semi gloss. (Daughter's preference).

Thanks for all of your positive comments! I really appreciate them and hope that it is deserving. It was a labor of love, that's for sure.
Now that I have the table completed, I can actually concentrate on the wedding itself. I was just frantically busy (on the table), now I may actually begin to get nervous about the big wedding!

Sounds like it's time to invest in an HVLP gun and a compressor if needed.

Sam,
Spraying this table with canned lacquer made me (gave me an excuse) make the leap and get the Fuji Q4 spray system. It just arrived yesterday and I will begin my "spraying learning curve" after the wedding. I hope it turns out to be as good as I have heard.

This neighbor of mine told me about a guy that had some mahogany in a shed that had belonged to his dad (who was a furniture maker). i contacted the guy and went over to look and he offered to sel me all of it for a lump sum. I ended up buying it(275 bf) for around $4/bf. Some of it was 16/4 and one 14' board is over 26" wide. When I planed it, the figure became evident.
It is reall y beautiful wood and very easy to work.
