Looking for suppliers for buckeye lumber for small projects and pen blanks. Any ideas?

I know this is going to sound flippant, but as an ex-Ohioan, wait for the next storm. There are thousands of Buckeye trees in Ohio.

For small blanks, you can "quick-dry" them in the microwave.

 I live in Hinckley, Ohio and I haven't seen any buckeye for sale in any of the places where I buy wood. I'll keep watching this post so I can give buckeye a try.;) Go Bucks.

Just look in the sky for the buzzards circling over a dead buckeye tree, if they came back to Hinckley this year.

Penn State carries Buckeye burl pen blanks. Also, you can usually find Buckeye lumber on eBay - Just search on "Buckeye lumber".

Have you stopped by The Hardwood store in Enon? They have a pretty good selection of a wide variety of species.

Bruce, free is one of my favorite words! I do work in a firewood yard and we have not received any buckeye from storm damaged or tree service trimmed/cut trees in the last several years. Virtually all other central Ohio trees, including horse chestnut, yes. I keep my eyes open for branches lying at the curb - just haven't seen any around Columbus/Reynoldsburg yet...

Is there another part of the state that I should be checking?

Sam, buckeye burl is gorgeous and dramatic wood. The pen companies say that buckeye burl is their most ordered blank material. Almost all of the burl is from the California buckeye - Aesculus californica and I need the Aesculus glabra (Ohio state tree). That is a fine line, but it is for a specific market. I will check eBay for the lumber.

Brian, I checked The Hardwood Store in Enon catalog - buckeye is not listed so I will call them to ask. Thanks for the lead! Kencraftcompany.com (http://kencraftcompany.com/) in Toledo lists buckeye in 8/4, 12/4 and 16/4 lumber - I'll be calling them as well.

Thanks again for your suggestions! Still seeking additional potential suppliers.

Did anyone check the obvious?

Sounds like a place where you should be able to find anything related to buckeye.

Mark, this is a listing of OSU related news and merchandise. It is a pretty comprehensive listing for Ohio State fans.

Chris, I see that you have only 7 posts so you must be fairly new here. You don't know yet that I really don't have much to offer as far as any real experience compared to all of the REAL talent here so I just rely on providing the 4th grade humor. Sorry, it's the best I can do.

Welcome to the Creek, BTW.

That's OK Mark, I'm unofficially in charge of the 4th grade humor at The Pen Shop (www.thepenshop.net (http://www.thepenshop.net)). :p
