Good Morning Everyone,

I have survived yet another Oncall week and am trying to recover from the weekend's oncall load. The older I get? The harder it is for me to work the hours I used to be able to work and keep on going like I was some "spring chicken". Oh well....

No shop time this weekend...all work and no play.

Daughter's B-Day is tomorrow, 4th, so we'll be doing B-Day stuff with her tomorrow.

Have a safe and happy 4th of July! May each of you remember those that have and are fighting for our freedom.

So what did YOU do this weekend?

Best of weeks to you all.

This is one of the reasons I left the car wash service industry. That on call gets old after putting in 50 plus hrs during the work week.

Being the temps were in the low 80"s Fri and Sat lots of "Honey Do" projects out of the way. Started Digging holes and pouring some concrete for extra support of the shop. A previous owner of the house built the shop, but just set block on the ground with no footings under them.

I spent the weekend avoiding as much heat and humidity as possible, but the shop was warm nonetheless. I always seem to get sidetracked, and this weekend was no exception when I jointed a couple of pieces of 8/4 hard maple and noticed a small nick in my jointer knives. Out came my HoneMate, (http://woodworker.com/cgi-bin/FULLPRES.exe?PARTNUM=95-420) and I pulled the fence and honed the knives. Got to thinking, since the fence is off it would be a great time to polish the beds. Got out the Renaissance Wax and my power buffer and began polishing. Then I noticed that I could build an incredible shine with repeated coats, so I kept working on that "small" task as time disappeared. I can remember my wife coming downstairs at some point and I told her I was "polishing the furniture." Her response to that gave me pause as to whether or not it would be in my best interest to go back upstairs anytime soon.
I finally got back to my primary reason for being in the shop--my workbench. Made some decisions about modifying the design with much thanks to Creekers who took the time to respond to THIS (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=38963) thread, especially Alan Turner.:)

I did manage to look at my lathe a couple of times, even read a little of Raffan's stuff, but no vortex this weekend.:(

Saturday was mostly spent helping LOML around the house, and I also assisted a friend's BIL with a few bandsaw cuts that he didn't have a way to do. It was overly hot (and comparatively humid), so the shop was a pretty brutal place to hang out. After a visit to the hospital to see LOML's mom, we went out to dinner...at a place that doesn't have a drive-up window, for a change.

Sunday was spent sweating profusely in the shop and trying to ignore my new BIL's whining as we worked on some of his viking re-enactment stuff. The guy's a walking, talking barrel of gloom. ;) Also did some tree pruning and got a few pieces of dunno tree for future use on the lathe.

Let's see...Nastia had her dance recital Friday night after two weeks of "Dance Camp" as part of her YMCA camp this summer...and it was really great. Saturday, I installed a new dryer after losing the old one to a sleeping sump pump (as detailed in the OT Forum) and got the restored 3pt back-blade for the tractor re-assembled (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=37469&page=3). I think I did something else on Saturday, but don't remember at this point...:o ...we then attended some very nice local fireworks that evening and the girls enjoyed it. Interesting anecdote...Alesya, our younger, stood up and put her hand over her heard when the Star Spangled Banner was played...unprompted. She also had her ears covered 10 minutes before the fireworks started as she doesn't like loud noises, but that didn't last long once the display began.

Sunday included mowing the lawn, cleaning the thistle out of the garden around the pond and...get this...turning the spindle for my neglected figured maple Shaker style candle stand project. Yes, ladies and gentlemen...I actually worked in my shop! Finished out the day with a nice, juicy porterhouse off the grill. Sunday was also a special day...the one year anniversary of the first time we met our girls (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=39033).

Weekend's not over here. Both my wife and I took today off to make a 4 day weekend. I finished my trailer overhaul, did some electrical projects, cleaned up the shop, repaired the sides on my 3-point carry all, and mowed the lawn. Tomorrow I'm planning to spend some time with the new lathe. I also have to meet up with Steve Ash to give him something. ;)

A wondrful weekend!!
Moved two bedrooms into boxes and the storage barn, then set one up as an office and one as a guest room. Fired up the kubota and moved four immense sections of a backyard maple over to the shop. Went out to the shop and forgot to turn on the big fan, wondered why I was sweating so much???Took an old tool cart and set it up for pen turning supplies, then spent time making out an order for craft supplies for pens. Finished the day with a cool martini and went to bed satisfied with the weekend.

Played some golf Saturday. Then dodged some pretty big storms, although we did get some almost golf ball size hail. We did get some very needed rain, although you'd never know it just two days later.

Sunday we drove our grand-daughter, Tama, to camp where she'll be for 3 weeks. Way up in the northwoods, only about 60 miles from Lake Superior. Then went and visited Bayfield before staying the night in Ashland. A leisurely drive home today after 650 miles and almost 13 hours total drive time.

Relax tomorrow and watch fireworks from the deck tomorrow night.

Hope everyone has a safe 4th. Drive careful and enjoy our nations B-Day.

Well I poured my first batch of concrete. I poured a footer for what will be a new enclosed entryway to my house along with a new storage shed below. I started out just wanting to replace the old deck and stairs that allowed entrance to the house and I started thinking...... Now I am buiding this new structure and after that a ipe deck and stairs to get up to the door.

Next I have to build forms for a small wall that will support the framing then pour the slab. Then my first framing job, then....., then....

Well as of last Friday, 06/30/06, I am on two week shutdown from FoMoCo. Stopped on my way home at the party store and bought some nasty pizza and a six pack to enjoy while working on my brakes ( no joy). Come to find out that the new rotors are wrong and the pads are wrong so I used the wifes truck next morning to return the items for right ones and guess what? Yep, don't have them in stock. Will have them for you Tuesday. Guess they put a different type of rotor and pad on the station wagon model. Whooda thunkit? Saturday was a bust because of no vehicle,so I slept and played on PC while the LOML and son went to party across road ( I am not much of a party person). Isn't that what vacations are for? Sunday I rebuilt one of the steps on my front porch that was tilting down, after that I started power washing said porch so we can restain it. It's now Monday and I continued powerwashing and stripping old finish off of porch, ran out of stripper so can't do anything till tomorrow, I would use the wifes vehicle but she went to her third party in as many days ( still no car).Tuesday I will pick up the brake parts at 8:00 am then it is off to lunch at a place in Michigan called Zenders in Frankenmuth. It's a Germanstyle town that sells a lot of chicken dinners. I won't be able to walk when I'm done UGH.:p . So after front porch and car brakes I still have to strip, powerwash and stain back deck before we go to the U.P. ( thats the Upper Pennisula for those of you that don't know 'nuttin) for a week of fishing and R&R.

I hadn't gotten much time in the shop since I completed the boys beds in late Feb. I had bought a kreg precision measuring sys for my miter saw at the ww show over the winter. With some upcoming projects that could use it, I decided to install it. First, I had to clean the shop as it had been home base for a bunch of small household tasks and I had basically just left all the tools and debris in the shop.
I put a 4' fixed fence on the left of the saw and an 8' removable fence on the right. The second pic shows the long fence in its stored position.
Unfortunately I discovered the laser on my saw is no longer working. Great, the only good part of the saw doesn't work.

Took Monday off to make a 4-day'r this time. This weekend has seen more spraying of finish on my door panels and drawer fronts. Hoping to apply the last of it today. 51 panles in all. I always tend to under-estimate the amount of time required for finishing. They are coming out great - I really like Target Coatings products. Also managed to score a little Delta lathe (46-700) from a local turner who upgraged to an awesome OneWay. This is my first lathe and I want to try my hand at turning to see if I like it. Price was very good and the person from whom I bought it was very nice and helpful. I told him about the creek so hopefully we will be seeing a post from him soon. Pics when I unload it from the truck.

Well, my day didn't go as planned. I met up with Steve, then ended up in the ER. Somehow I managed to pull my back getting out of the shower this morning. By noon I could barely walk.

I spent most of the weekend reassembling then painting my Oliver 399D planer. This is a 1950 machine I bought it back in March, then had the cutterhead bearing replaced by a local motor shop. I ran it after reinstalling the motor & cutter head, and it runs well. The machine started out in a school, so it has relatively few hours on it for it's age. It was painted green and yellow when I got it, but I couldn't abide that school shop look. I still have to fashion a power cord, reinstall the blades, oil the bed rollers and table, clean up & permanently reattach the badge, and turn a new handwheel handle, but it's almost done overall.

Backside, sitting on it's pallet.

Front, on it's mobile base (OK, that's really my pallet jack.) I bought the pallet jack so I could park it up against the wall in my garage when I don't need it. I didn't use a mobile base because the pallet jack will let me move most of the rest of my garage machines too, once I get them on proper bases.
