This is the biggest bowl I've turned so far, about 12.5" x 2.5". It's from a piece of a cottonwood tree I helped cut down that has been standing dead for a few years. I think a lot of the color in the wood is from water stains. It was very dry but good solid wood and being dry didn't fuzz up as bad as green cottonwood. I also tried a new finish on it. It's Rustoleum High Gloss Lacquer. Goes on pretty nice, a lot thicker than Deft.

Curt that is a beautiful piece. I guess I may have to try some dry cottonwood as we have them all over here. I always stayed away from it because everyone said it is a mess to deal with. Boy that looks mighty good. Finish is great.

Nice piece Curt! If I could get wood like that out of the cotton woods on my property I would cut them all down! Very nice!

I have always stayed away from cottonwood because of what I hear about the fuzz problem, but these are beautiful. I do like this type of lacquer, did you have a problem with it running?

I like this lacquer but it goes on a lot thicker than what I'm used to. It gives almost like a plastic coating even with one coat. It didn't run but this bowl is almost flat, more like a platter.

Wow Curt, it makes me think I've got one too many cottonwoods out back... and they do have that nasty stinging caterpillar. Hmm

You did a fine job on the bowl.

Curt, that is absolutely fabulous. You've really let the wood sing, and the form and finish are spectacular.
