View Full Version : My first dovetails

A first for me, I have never used dovetails before but always wanted to. Neighbor and SMC member Keith July told me I could use his Keller jig and routers to make these for my son's kitchen cabinets (yes, I've been forever with this project it seems) Steve Jr. is just about ready to move in his own home and I figured I better get these drawer boxes done.

Now that I've made some dovetails, I'll be looking into some equiptment to make these from now on for everything I do.

As with every finished job, I always have a little celebration beverage to go along with it....this time in a newly aquired mug from fellow creeker John Miliunas.

Thanks for looking.

Jim, he did cut them by hand. He grabbed the router in his hands and used it to cut the dovetails!:D

Steve, nice work! What species of wood is it?

Jim, someday I'll learn to cut them by hand. Tried once and failed miserably.

Mark, the specie is Ash....of course :D

Steve,
So what’s it gonna be, Keller, Akeda, PC... or are you going to get Leigh?

Don't know yet Frank, I'll do some researching and checking the archives here on SMC, there is a wood expo in September here in town so I'll probably watch some demos and hopefully get educated to make that decision. I'll be watching upcoming threads on the subject as well.

I like the ones w/o the Packers mug on top better (Go Bears).

Nice job on your first dovetails. You should have started w/ a HF first though because looking at your results your going to spend some big $ on a jig now!

Steve, you didn't make the B93 Bash did you -- oldest son camped there for 2 days, but I made the first day and saw Trace Adkins... great song too..

Anyway on the dovetails, if you just want to do through dovetails for the time being, consider a STOTS template. It's about 40-50$ and lets you make what is essentially a Keller Jig for dovetails in whatever size you need. Check out John Lucas @ Woodshopdemos.com (http://www.woodshopdemos.com/dtshoot-1.htm)for a review and demostration of several jigs including the STOTS.

Nice mug Steve. Oh yeah, nice job on the tails too. I'm scared to try them, I now I'll end up wanting to spend more money! (Spent lots of money on a future gloat this week already.)

What thickness did you use for the drawer sides? 1/2" 5/8" 3/4" What is the norm?

Jerry, 5/8" was the thickness used.

Nope Michael I missed out on the B93 bash, but thought Trace lyrics kinda worked for me given my obsession with a red Chevelle :D

Looks good Steve, now you're ready to try 'em by hand!

Feel free to wander over to the neander side if that peaks your curiosity.
