Wolverine Vari-Grind Query

I just got my new (used) vari-grind attachment from Amazon. I do not have the wolverine grinding jig and am wondering if anyone as tried using this attachment without it? The instructions say something about drilling a 3/8 inch hole for the stem to pivot in. Obviously I'm gonna give it a shot before I spend another 70 or 80 bucks for the jig. Anyone have any experience or advice?
