Shellac - How much do I need?

For those of you who did not view my project picture posting yesterday, I've taken the advice to finish this walnut bed in a BLO and shellac finish.

My question is: how many pounds do I need?
How far does 1/2lb, 1 lb or 5 lbs of shellac flakes take me?

One half pound would give you somewhat more than a quart of 2 lb. cut shellac. This is probably enough, but a lot depends on the desired look, and how much sanding to fill pores you do. I would buy 1 lb. of flakes, but not mix it all up to start with. I suspect 1/2 lb lots are relatively expensive compared to 1 lb. lots. Left over flakes have a very long shelf life if kept dry and cool.
