Any thoughts on using one of http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EJX202/ref=ord_cart_shr/104-5556887-6270335?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance&n=228013 for dovetails on a PC 4212 jig? Looking for something small, light but powerful enough to do a good job. I do realize it takes only 1/4" bits... otherwise, what do you think?

No way! A few days ago, I took that same router to a job(didn't want to bring my big Makita:rolleyes: ), to put a 1/2" cove on top of about 20' of pine baseboard. It took me about 20 minutes, as I could only make 3 or 4 light passes. I was covered in dust. It is only meant for very light work and would be grossly underpowered for DT work. Besides, they are too tippy and they do get very warm when they have to work hard. Stick with a 2hp or so for DT's.

Would use with dovetail cutters < 3/8" max D. only.

A good utility router (http://patwarner.com/pr20_subbase.html) for light work, however.

Thanks for the responses.

OK, changing gears in mid thread.... If the Bosch Palm is out...would this be a good one at 8 lb, and single speed or variable for $10 more?

I'm looking for something lighter/less expensive than my PC690 and Bosch 1617 mainly for dovetails on the 4212 jig.

Selection made somewhat simple (http://patwarner.com/selecting_router.html).

I don't think that there is such a thing, lighter anyway but less expensive maybe. I have been looking for a less expensive option myself. I have the Milwaukee 5615 and love it but more expensive. Toolking has factory rebuilt Dewalt 618s and PC 690s in the $120 area sometimes but they are gone as soon as they are listed. Just missed the 618.

I have the DeWalt 621 and it is a good router but I do not like it for dovetail jigs. I would just buy a new Milwaukee 5615/5616 but hate to fork out more than necessary just for dovetails since I do not do a lot of them anyway. I am going to keep an eye out at Toolking.

I do not know anything about the Hitachi but I remember pretty good reports about their larger router. I think that the reports were after short term use and do no know what the owners thought after long term use. The one thing that I do know is that it sure is ugly. I would not buy on that basis alone. Kind of reminds me of the cheap Poulan chain saws that they came out with a few years ago. I would rather spend more for a brand that I have more confidence in. You can take this paragraph with a grain of salt as they are just thoughts that crept into my head.

Hey Guys,

Bob Noles the "Dovetail King" is back. (Creeker insider joke) Always good to hear from you!

What routers are you using for your 4212 Bob?

Alan,

The 5615 is closer in weight, but only 1 3/4...the 5616 is the same 2 1/4 as the Hitachi, but over 3 lb heavier and $55 more expensive! The M12V (3 1/4 unit) has been around for a long time and has a lot of great reviews for table use (heavy). The MV12SC/VCs may have that "Poulan" look, but anything is better than the "box" look of their bigger brother...LOLOL!

Anybody have any experience with the Hitachi M12SC

I have 2 dedicated Bosch laminate trimmers that I use for dovetails. One for the straight bit and the other for the dovetail bit. Works well.

I almost bought that same router about a month ago.

But ended up buying a couple more of the tried and true pc 691's

I have that Hitachi router. I think its a great tool. Ive used it on the 4212 jig and it worked fine. All the PC bushings fit and it has a 1/2 collet as well.

Good choice IMHO.

On implus I decided to try the Hitachi M12VC 2 1/4 because it was so cheap at Amazon with free shipping and 10 per cent off, even though I still think that it is really ugly. I probably should have gone the Milwaukee or PC route but I will give it a shot. They are out of stock right now but I am not in a big hurry. I will try to remember to let you know what I think when it arrives but I realize that the report will not be of real value as the longivity of the product will not be known for a good while.

I think you will be satisfied with the performance of that machine.

I am a big fan of Hitachi. I have the router, the 4" angle grinder and the jigsaw. All perform great and are built like tanks and solid. You can feel the quality of construction by how solid they are.

I will be getting the M12C plunge router for my router table and the cut off saw as well soon.

Just MHO.

I've got a 690LRVS, and like it a lot, but it is heavy...and the motor turning when you adjust the heigth is a pain. I also have a 1617VS, which is lighter and easy, IMO, to adjust. I'm just looking for something smaller, lighter to do the work with the 4212 jig. And...the price is right.

Hmmmmm....

I bought the Hitachi (variable speed two base kit) and while I haven't worked it too hard yet so far it has been great. The biggest difference I've noticed is how much quieter it runs than any other router I've used (which admittedly isn't very many).

I just got an email from Rockler with their weekly sales and they have the Hitachi kit (single speed) for under $100.
