Porch Column Cladding Ideas?

I'm think about cladding my plain 4x4 porch columns in cedar and perhaps adding some molding to give them some bulk and character.

I'm thinking something similar to the cladding that surrounds the T-111 on the planter box I just completed.

Does anyone have any tips or ideas? If you have some pics of what you've done, that would be even better.

It would make sense to continue that style if you like it, especially if the planter (and any siblings...) will be in the same area. Continuing a theme is a very nice way to unify a space.

Keith - this is what we had on our house back in the US. I can't take credit - the builder came up with it. It sure looked better than the structural 4 x 4 wood columns. I think the overall dimensions ended up about 8" square.
