Our Godson Nick and his F/A-18 Hornet are there on the Lincoln.

"Navy aircraft carriers USS Ronald Reagan (front), USS Kitty Hawk (middle) and USS Abraham Lincoln (back) sail in formation at the start of Valiant Shield 2006 in the Philippine Sea, June 18, 2006. As the largest joint exercise in recent history, it encompasses 28 naval vessels, nearly 300 aircraft and approximately 22,000 servicemembers from the Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. U.S. Navy photo by Chief Petty Officer Spike Call"

I probably wouldn't use "middle east" and "think" in the same sentence.

Well. Two out of the three have political names; but all three have US of A license plates - and that's what counts.

I always knew that the reason they put the carrier at the center of the formation was that they didn't know how to keep on station. Now I know it is true. Not one of the carriers is in a straight line with any of the others. Sheesh, my CO would kick my behind for being out of station like that. :D

Thats some serious fire power making holes in those waters. Only one problem, the Enterprise is missing out of that photo. Im a little partial though, brings back a few memories. Some good some not so good, then theres that occasional night I cant remember much of.

Makes for great pictures, but sucks big-time from a tactical standpoint.

Believe me, they only get that close for photo ops. Airdales are notorious ship drivers. They usually give each other lots of maneuvering room. I had to make a 360 turn one day when the USS Saratoga decided to change course 90 degrees towards us without warning. Fortunately, a frigate is much more maneuverable than a carrier.

The photo was released by the Navy so I'm sure it was staged. Here's another one showing some of the guys in the air, they probably staged that too.

Watch where the carriers head after Valiant Shield is over to get an idea what the U.S. will do in the mideast.
If all head to the Persian Gulf, it will not make the Iranian mullahs happy.

Regardless of the politics the 3 ships present an impressive display of naval power. As someone who has seen his own countries navy sputter along during the last 30 years, without shame, it makes me feel good to have the United States as a neighbour. I wish my government would be more serious its own navy.

If you want "close", you have to partake in an UnRep

Joe,

That is indeed impressive! I was fortunate enough to tour the Lincoln just before she was commissioned out of Newport News. It is one tough piece of iron!

You must be very proud of your Godson. And so are we.

Its a small world isnt it I made the steam so Tim could launch his planes excuse me, his birds. That first one was more fun. Capt. Kelly was definatly a liberty hound. I do remember being off the Aleutian Islands with the Coral Sea and the Midway in 35 and 40 foot swells and we were the only ship that could launch planes I have a pic somewhere of 2 F-14s escorting a Russion Bear I think that was your squadron If I can dig it up I,ll scan and post it.

Remember getting stuck on that sand bar about 500 yards from the pier after being gone 9 months

I hope that the apparent closeness is due to the use of a very long lense, otherwise the OOD on the Kity Hawk, in particular, is really not having a good day, and the public affairs officer who arranged it would not enjoy what he was being called (privately of course).

Done plenty of unreps. Worse, I have done a highline personnel (of me) transfer. It's a good thing I wasn't paying a lot of attention, because when I got to the other side they told me the ships had been drifting apart enough that they were close to running out of line to keep the full complement of the line handlers maintaining the tension. Possibly just hazing ( I was an ensign), but no one ever let on.

I do remember that sand bar....*LOL* but it wasn't so funny that morning. I remeber being in my dress uni along with most of everyone else all standing on one side of the ship to try and free it up.

I also remember sending a letter to the CO of the second crusie stating how crappy the second one was compared to the first....abotu how we never had fresh milk after the second week and asking who he was sucking up to never pulling us into port....I'm sure you can imagine my surprise when I got a call from my LPO saying the CO requested a face-to-face with me...(e4 photmate)....yup THAT was not a pleasant meeting for me OR my LPO.

I still have lots of pics of bears and russian ships...plus a few of the dallas cowboy cheerleaders:eek:
