There has been a bit of conversation about IPE recently so I am posting a shot of the Black Ipe. This bowl or box is about 10" in dia. and was rough turned to about 1" thickness and boiled for several hours and let to dry over about a month until it was very dry. The finish is floor grade polyurethane 2 part equal mix plus thinner. The finish was wet sanded and buffed on the lathe. Sorry about the photo but the dark color plus the shine makes for a difficult photo. The colors of this wood can vary from this dark chocolate brown to black or greenish black. It is HARD.

Now that is beautiful. I love the shape of the lidded bowl and that wood makes it look so rich. Nice, nice job.

Very nicely done Jim, that piece looks like it made out of chocolate. I really like the finish.

Great job, Jim. I suspect you got into the exotic hardwood business just to support your lathe habit. Talk about a great convergence.

Never seen black ipe before. The stuff we get up here for decks is about the color of teak. Great job.
