I used a laserjet printer and was able to get the letters to go on faintly, but if I used the tool too long the wood would burn and the letters would blur out. How do I get a darker imprint without burning the wood or paper?

Allot has to do with the type of laser used. If the laser uses a high temp to set the toner, you will have the type of problems you mentioned.
"Sometimes" if you can use a heavy paper though the laser, the toner will not adhere to the sheet, which is what you need to make it easy to transfer the toner to the wood.
