I think I've finally figured out that what I'm looking for is called a Rotary Draw Latch, only I cant find what I'm looking for so thought I'd ask here. I think where I've seen these is possibly on large ice chests (no luck so far googling through those either). The portion of the latch that's attached to the lid is just a small plate with the edge rolled into a J shape. The bottom portion of the latch has a mating J-shaped piece that rotates into the top piece from the side so that the J's intersect and lock together. The rotating piece on the bottom is moved by turning a small paddle type handle on the face of the latch. I think the paddle level is around 2-2.5" long on the ones I've seen. I've found all sorts of interesting looking Rotary Draw Latches - just not the one's I'm picturing.
Don't know if I've described this very well, but if this rings any bells with you, do you know who might have these?

Used to use these all the time for sound reinforcement speaker cases in a previous life in the music biz:

Is it something like that? If it is, I always used Sessions hardware. Never failed:

Sound like you're looking for the type of latches used on Anvil cases. Here are a few (http://www.starcase.com/hardwareproductsheet.htm?wcw=google#Catches%20&%20Locks) I found while Googling "anvil case parts". "Draw latch" also got some decent hits on Google.

Thanks Vaughn - the anvil type are in the right family, just not the ones I've seen (and cant find). I'm pretty sure these would be a surface mount type. Cant tell for sure but the anvil type look like they need to be recessed in. They also have a lever type handle that pivots on the end vs. the butterfly shaped handle on the Anvil type that pivot in the middle and are much less industrial looking. So far I've googled up about 15 different phrases. I'm getting a lot of "in the ballpark"s - just cant find the type I've seen before. I'm not done looking, but thought I might get lucky here.

At least I've finally found a pic that looks like what I've been picturing. I found this on Coleman's site. Anybody seen any latches like these anywhere?
