Tod..........I remember that earlier this year you were recommending air driven tools as an alternative to electric. I need to go to some kind of angled sander to power sand my turnings. What brand and or model would you recommend that I might use for sanding bowls?

Thanks In Advance!

ken, the sioux is a very solid unit, they make the one milwaukee rebrands as theirs in electric. the right angle grinder in the pic. is a masterpower by cooper tools. dotco and dynabrade are also good stuff. what type of grinder/sander/ rotary tool are you looking for? i know that several folks here like the sioux/milwaukee electric drills but those are really slow when you get into the air tools. dotco makes a angled head pencil grinder that spins at 85k-rpm! so really the question is what type of abrasive or cutter do you want to spin? .02 tod

Tod...........Just looking for something to sand my bowls with. It was recommended that I get a power sander. I getting ready to make a couple of NEs and I'll need something to sand the "bottms" and then manually sand the wings according to those more experienced than I.

ken, here`s a link to a dynabrade unit that`s available through most bodyshop supply houses or an industrial supplier..

but if i where you i`d go to the auction site and search for a dotco 1/4" collet right angle die grinder they`re real workhorses and you can get a ton of sanding/polishing/grinding accessories for them.
i`ve never heard of the grex unit that jim mentions untill i saw them here on smc, i don`t know where or by whom they`re made or where to get parts or service. .02 tod

I have been thinking about using air tools but wonder what would be needed in an air compressor.

Keith.........the needs in an air compressor is really determined by the "consumption" of air by a particular tool. Obviously a 60 gallon, 5 hp, dual stage compressor would probably handle anything we'd normally use. Right now that isn't an option for me. I have a 5hp single stage 26 gallon that I believe will handle the cfm needed to power this type of a sander.

Keith,

The Dynabrade that Tod is talking about requires 18 SCFM at 90psi. That would require a single stage 5 running hp compressor minimum. I have an Ingersol Rand 5 running hp 80 gal single stage that gives the minimum output which equals about $800 minimum investment if you do not already have one of appropriate size.

I personally think that if you are going to be running on the edge, like I would be using that sander, that you should buy a compressor that is rated continuous duty. Mine is only if you are running synthetic oil so keep your eyes open as to the rateing.

keith, in my one man shop i run two 80gal units with a 4 cylinder 2-stage pump driven by a real 5hp motor on each tank. 95% of the time the second unit doesn`t kick on...02 tod
