Here are a few pics of a curio cabinet built for my daughter. My apologies for the photos; the lighting was not very good. A number of firsts for me on this project include:

1. Rail and stile doors
2. First project using my router table http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=33871
3. Never used shellac before
4. Never used Waterlox before

The finish is a combination of mahogony, cherry and special walnut stains. My daughter picked the color from a few samples shown to her and settled on a finish that is "sort-of" reddish-brown. There are four coats of shellac followed by two of Waterlox. I originally intended to rub it out with pumice (would have been another first) but was so happy with it at this stage decided to let it be. Thanks to Steve, Dave and Bruce for providing guidance in the finishing forum in answer to my questions.

There are six movable shelves not shown in the pictures. I followed plans for a "U-Bild Craftsman Bookcase" for the dimensions but modified their joining methods since I did not want to join with nails. Used 1/4 oak ply for the back rabbeted into the sides also.

Thanks for looking.

Nice job on the cabinet, Ralph. What wood did you use? (I gather it had a variety of stains.) We could use one much like that in our house. I also like the router table and hutch. I must have missed them when you posted them originally.

Ain't it nice knocking out several "firsts" on a project?

and a very lucky daughter. The finish is excellent. I will have to go find your thread in the finishing forum to learn more about that.

Beautiful cabinet and work, very nice design and color.
Your router table also looks like kind of furniture, very nice.

Ralph, the cabinet is absolutely beautiful!

I do have one question. What type of glass did you use? If you didn't use tempered glass, I urge you to replace it with tempered. If a small child fell into it and it broke, the results might be disastrous. If it's tempered, it would just break into small harmless pieces.

Please don't think I'm critizing. The cabinet is beautiful, and I love the color. Fabulous job!!

Beautiful, Ralph! I hope to actually be able to build something like that one day and have pictures to post about the process, rather than just prattle on about "which one should I get, tool XXX or tool YYY??"

I agree on the tempered glass comment, btw - I've been a party to shattering glass and it is quite frightful to see a sheet of glass plumetting downward.... not much slows it down, at least not without incurring one evermore cut in the process!

Take care - keep up the great work!

Looks great, it looks like walnut. And for the pictures ,you done a bunch better than my last post. I haven`t got the photography down very good. It don`t seem like anyone grades that, and they do help a lot. Barry Bruner

Vaughn, The wood was mostly 3/4 oak plywood (sides, top, shelves) except the back which was 1/4 oak plywood and the 3/4 solid oak face frame and edges on shelves. Face frame was joined with biscuits and glue. Used pocket screws on bottom shelf and the center fixed shelf where the holes can't easily be seen.

Thanks to all for the comments. I never thought about tempered glass but sounds like the correct approach. Will check into it since would like to avoid any possible tragedy.
