I have had some Maple and other wood stored under a tarp since last year and I was looking at it the other day and decided it was ready to start turning. This one is going to a neighbor to go with a large Maple platter I gave her.

It is 7-3/4" x 3" and is finished with only the Beall buff. I didn't want to change any of the spalted color.

Thanks for looking.

I have had some Maple and other wood stored under a tarp since last year and I was looking at it the other day and decided it was ready to start turning.

That's a really nice bowl Dick. When you say you decided it was ready do you mean it was dry enough or were you doing something to make it spalt like that? Is there a way to see how that spalting is going just by looking at the outside of the wood?

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. This was fun but a lot of sanding.

Curt, the only thing I am doing to make them spalt is keeping the wood under a tarp and on the ground under the trees. There is enough air circulation to help it dry but being on the ground it is getting moisture to help the spalting.

The ends were also coated with anchorseal. I just keep looking at it from time to time until I see enough spalting on the ends and then I take a piece in and cut it on the bandsaw to check how it is on the inside. From the piece I cut (in the picture) I would say it is all about ready, working from the ground up.

There was a bit of tear-out in this but no punky wood in it. It is also light as a feather.

Hope I answered you question.
