Another piece from the box of wood I got from Bill Grumbine. 8" tall x 2-3/4" max diameter, just buffed and waxed, aluminum insert from Ikea:

You can hog out most of the hole for the insert with a forstner bit. Then, if the candleholder is flat, the hole is big enough to take the chuck jaws. Otherwise, you can turn it between centers with the hole at the headstock.

In either case, the insert covers up whatever damage the chuck/drive-center does to the inside of the hole...one less thing to screw around with after the main shape is done. I like that.:cool:
