I'm not quite sure if I would call this a burl, but the log (about 16" across) had a big, spiky knot about 10" in diameter. That's what this piece is turned from.

I rough turned it back in December. I thought it was pretty hard back then. After it dried, it was like concrete. I had to do a lot of sharpening, take thin cuts, and forget about sanding.

All told, I think it was worth the effort. The piece has a huge amount of interest; way more than I could capture in these picture.

10" across, just under 6" tall, 1/2"ish walls. Finish is 2 coats of Danish oil, followed by Bealling. I learned not to get any knuckles involved with the Tripoli wheel, not to use white diamond on Red Elm, and picking wheel fluff out of dozens of holes in the piece is not too much fun :)

Comments always welcome.

Yessir, lots of wavy grain in there! I like that dark color, too. Nice bowl from what sounds like a tough chunk of wood!

I'd like to forget it, too. It was a nightmare to sand. It took hours to get it right.

Thanks for the nice comments,

Great looking bowl. I think the finish is perfect for that piece. Smooth and shiney but not sheeny. Really nice.

Joe, you've done that wood proud with that bowl. The pics may not show what you want them to show, but oh man, is there a lot going on there!

I like that bowl!

Thank you! I mix my own Danish oil, and use satin finish poly for just this reason. I like a more natural looking finish on my bowls.
