I recently bought a used Delta 28-276 14" bandsaw. It's in prime condition, however, the upper belt guard will not fit over the pulley/belt. Delta sent me a second cover (at no charge) thinking that the original was the wrong one, but it's the same size.

Now I'm thinking it must have come with the wrong pulley. The pulley on the bandsaw is 7" diameter. (The guard is 7-1/8" wide which doesn't leave room for the belt.) The original owner swears he didn't change any components.

I'd appreciate it if someone with a 28-276 could measure their upper pulley diameter. This would sure help when I call Delta back.

Thanks, Rob

Probably no help whatsoever, but could the motor or pulley be mounted wrong?

Rob,

On my saw the motor pulley is 2 3/4 inchs & the saw pulley is 6 inches
& the motor RPM is 1725.

Thanks Chris. That 6" pulley would sure make the belt guard fit.

I did some quick calculations (I think they are right). On a 14" wheel bandsaw with your motor rpm and pulley sizes your blade speed would be 2890 feet/min.

My motor turns 1750 rpm and motor pulley is 2" which gives me a blade speed of 1830 feet/min.

What is the appropriate speed for a bandsaw blade? This is my first bandsaw so I'm still trying to learn my way around it!

Most 14" BSs I've looked at lately have a top speed around 3300 fpm, and a lower speed around 1600 fpm.

28-276 is the enclosed-base model, yes?

Mine is 2005-vintage (two-speed), upper pulley has a max diameter of 7"...but the upper pulley cover is 8-1/2" wide.
