View Full Version : My New Plane

A couple weeks ago, I made a plane from a Hock kit in a class. There were three of us in the class, and I still had stitches in my finger from the class the week before (oops), so I didn't spend the time sharpening the blade then (I had to keep the stitches dry and clean). I also decided that I rather liked the blocky body the way I made it -- I could always change it later. :)

I still have a few bugs to work out (narrow shavings), but here she is on her test run with some butternut.

It wasn't really that hard, what with most of the hard part done and all, but it was a fun way to spend a Friday night (prepping for glue-up) and Saturday.

The sander in class wasn't terribly optimal, so I'll probably get around to rasping it smoother at some point.

Yes, the Hock kits are based on the Krenov-style planes.

One thing our instructor said (for anyone considering making one) is that it's easier to get the sole on if you use one dowel rather than the two that come with the kit. Since we were using 5-minute epoxy, speed in getting the sole on was paramount.

Oh, and if you screw up and put the sole on upside-down the first time, if you put plastic wrap or a plastic bag between the sole and the clamps, it'll all work out. I was expecting to have to sand off the plastic bag, but didn't. Yay.

It looks like a sports car.Does it have a chipbreaker.

Okay, that's it, I'm going to have to get some racing stripe inlay and route a recess on it. :)

Yes, it does have a chipbreaker. :)

Racing stripes are one thing, but I'd draw the line at a whale's tail. Nice plane. I want to try that some day.

Class was at my local Woodcraft. I also took a hand tool class through my local adult school.
