What is the best way to turn the inside of cylinder. With straight sides about 6 to 7 inches deep. Suggestions? Daniel

Very heavy square scraper with appropriate support. There are tool rests designed specifically for this kind of thing...they have a long flat portion that you extend into the piece to provide support to the tool with minimal overhang.

depending on the diameter of the hole, you could consider using a forstner bit. Mount a chuck in your tailstock (if you can) and it should automaticly center it. just take it sslllllooooooowwwwwww.

The answer to your question also relies on whether the workpiece is mounted as facework (flat grain) or centerwork (endgrain). There are numerous solutions to each; and while some are common to both all have unique advantages as well.

The outside diameter is about 5-1/2" and the walls will be thick (1/2"). It will be a natural edge box or cylinder made out of an Australian burl.
