hardware for old style door

i have to hang a few 5 panel doors for a customer and she wants the old mortice style locks.i really don't want to mortice the doors to a 4-1/2" depth.i'm looking for a lockset that would look like the mortice set with the rectangular plate and glass knobs, but i would only have to drill a 2-1/8" hole like the newer locksets.i tried searching the internet but no luck.does such an animal exist?thanks.

Maybe she just wants the old door knobs since you cannot see a mortise lock. You could just apply a large plate on the edge of the door to give the mortise illusion. Peter

VanDykes has just what you want, its called a tube latch. Drill a 1" hole like for a regular door latch, mortise the plate, then drill a small hole (3/8, maybe 1/2) with the proper backset for the knob spindle. Just make sure your client knows what they're getting (of course). I did a bunch of lock mortises for a client once who insisted on actual mortise locks- reputed to last longer, maybe, maybe not.

One of the drawbacks of a mortise lock set, is that it actually weakens the door. So much wood is removed, that it becomes a weak point for forced entries. If a client is made aware of this it might give them a different perspective. Just because it's the old way of doing things doesn't mean it's better.
