View Full Version : Dyed Maple burl hollow form

This Maple burl blank had some spalting on the bottom that didn't go well with the rest of the form, so I figured it would be a good candidate for dyeing. Did a base coat of bright red, then blended in some black from the bottom then Cherry amber overall. 7" diameter by 5" tall, buffed lacquer finish.

Good gooberly goobers, man! I have not been a big fan of any kind of red dye - but I am now!!!! This is just very, very impressive to this ol' Arky!!! Excellent work!

Very outstanding Travis. Like Mark, I've never been a fan of dyed turnings, but you have probably just changed my mind as well. Very pretty piece!!!!

Travis, you are indeed one of the Lathe Kings around here. You never cease to amaze me. This piece is just another in a long line of gorgeous pieces you've done and shown here. Not only is the form superb, I really like the way the dye darkens toward the bottom of the form. Thanks for the inspiration.

Aw, man.........Not only do you do excellent forms, excellent burning, excellent finishes, now you're doing excellent dyeing. Just when I think I know how to turn a little you up and do another spectacular piece like this.:) :)

Wow, Travis. That's absolutely amazing. The dye job looks so natural that I wouldn't have guessed the wood for maple.
