Jim Ketron left this big Box Elder blank with me a couple months ago. It was 10" square by 14". I thought about cutting it up into a couple blanks, but decided to go with a taller vase form. It didn't have much color in it but has some nice curl. I added a little texturing and burning to break it up a little. 13 1/2" tall by 9" diameter with a couple light coats of thinned lacquer then buffed.

I swear, that can't be the same vase you showed me the other night. Did the wheels on your steady rest do all those burn marks on that nice curly box elder? Sorta looks like tread marks......;) Beautiful pattern, Travis, sorta reminds me of a Celtic pattern or similar. Wonderful work!:D

Great form and finish. The wood burning really adds a lot of interest to this piece, since there isn't much color in the wood. Beautiful.

Awesome Vase Travis!
Shape is lovely and the burning sets it off nicely.
I waited to give you that blank for over a year, glad I saved it for ya!
You done it proud!

Wow, blown away again by your talent Travis. That would be a beautiful vase without the burning but it's incredible with that design. Every thing you do seems to out do the last.

While that dyed maple piece will handle a straw, this one looks ready for a backhoe.

Cool!

Wonderful!!!! Beautifully done Travis. (Once again)

Hey I have a personal question....When you do intricate burning work like this...It must be very tedious. So, do you sit in front of the TV and burn for hours or do you lock yourself in the shop in the quiet...or do you break it up into several sessions?

Thanks everyone. John, the burning took all of an hour, maybe. Just leave the piece chucked up and pull up a stool in front of the lathe, use the tool rest to rest my hand on and rotate the turning with my other hand. Good ventilation or a dust collector is a must!;)
