I was given some Sapele at Dicks BBQ last year from Big Mike. This stuff is very heavy (Had to ask him if it was wet!) but turned beautifully. :D

It is 9 7/8" x 7/8" x 3/16" thick and has 1 coat of gel poly for a finish. I think I'm just going to leave it as it is now without putting on another coat or buffing it out. It is very open grained and I'd hate to have to pick out the buff compounds from all them lil' holes.

The color is off a bit. I cannot seem to get the red out....it's really more brownish red. :o

Very, very nice Joe!!!! That Sapele is simply beautiful wood. I really like the shape and how well you did on the bottom of this one. Very nice attention to detail. Congrats on a beautiful job and a very nice turned piece Joe!!!:D

That is excellent, Joe!! I've got a couple 4' pieces, 1/2 inch thick - looks like I need to break out the glue. Stunning.

Nice platter Joe. Do you use that vacuum pump on the platters too? That bottom is really clean.

Oh yeah!!! :D :D

The vac is sweet for finishing bottoms. I always had a hard time doing them with comp. or jamb chucks. Not anymore! :D :D

That's a beauty Joe. I don't think I've ever heard of Sapele. Is that a domestic or one of those exotic imports?
