I have ordered Maple blanks to use for lasering photos on to. However, I noticed that many people use Red Alder for this. Is there a reason why that type of wood is preferable? Cost? Grain?
Thanks

Pamela,
I have used both species for engraving photographs and each has its merits. I can't say that either is a better choice, both types of wood engrave really well and the cost is basically the same in my area. Alder engraves a bit deeper than maple and has more grain but both woods finish well and provide excellent contrast.
