Here is a new prickly pear cactus pen I made this weekend. It is black dyed EnviroTex resin with a satin nickel Baron kit. The finish is CA and is very shiny, even though the pic does not really show it. Comments always welcome!

Absolutely gorgeous pen, Curtis. I love what you've done with the Prickly Pear skeleton. Question: Is using EnviroTex anything like using Epoxy?

Henry,

Yes, EnviroTex is pretty much just like regular epoxy except it has a longer open time and seems to degass itself better, leaving a blank without bubble holes. The only thing I don't like about it is it is a little soft when cured.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. It is fun coming up with new stuff to use for pens and I am pretty proud of the cactus idea. It is a lot of work but worth it.

I think the cactus pens you've done and shown here are the most unique (and aesthetically pleasing) pens I've seen, Curtis. Major kudos on the idea and the execution.

Curtis,

That is really an excellent looking pen.

Speaking of epoxies, have you tried any of the rifle stock bedding materials, like Steel Bed, Devcon or Pro Bed 2000? I know the Pro Bed is available in black or brown, would assume you could tint the others as well. I have done quite a few (!) rifles with the Pro Bed and it gets very hard, especially if you heat it during the initial cure.

Again, great looking pen, very unique. That's called an eye-stopper.............

Curtis,

That pen is most awesome! Good photography too. That has got to be the coolest method of making a pen I've ever seen.

I can't wait to get my hands on zee lathe! Zee vortex has me!
