View Full Version : Disaster averted? (Batter charger fixed)

I guess I can't tell.

For those who gave me some links to find some small electronic parts online, well, I found the parts locally that I needed, so...

My Porter-Cable battery charger is BACK UP AND CHARGING!

It took a new 1000 uF capacitor, a new transistor (which gets attached to a quite large aluminum chunk of a heat sink), and then when those didn't do the trick, despite being the visible culprits, a little poking, probing and prodding with a voltmeter showed me that the 3A hard-wired fuse had indeed blown (you couldn't tell visibly--it's one of those slow-blow ones with the coil around a central support and the break in the coil was on the bottom). Radio Shack didn't have a similar fuse that had axial solder leads, but I managed to jerry-rig something using an inline automotive fuse holder. I actually had to solder the fuse leads directly to the fuse because I can't read packages.

Unfortunately, this means I don't get to go buy a new cordless drill.

So, if your battery charger isn't working--take it apart and fix it, it's not hard!
