The following is actually the brainchild of Christopher Hartley. http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=36941 I'm merely playing the "middle man" in this endeavor. :)

So, here's how we're going to play the game. If you have a blank or blanks, which you wish to trade with the general populace on the forum, submit a post on this thread. We prefer to have a pretty accurate description (flavor, size, wet/dry, etc.), hopefully a picture and, if you can, maybe even an approximate weight, so that folks can determine if shipping won't be too great an expense.

Once posted, other folks can see what there is to offer and, if they like what you have, can then PM you with their "counter-offer", that being, blanks which they may have available to you. If all is agreeable, make arrangements to complete the swap via PM's. Once complete, the particular blank (or blanks) is now unavailable, so you need to determine how you'll make that known.

My preference in this would be for you to simply go back out to your original post, use the "edit" button and just "delete" the post. This would help prevent clutter down the road. If you have more than one item listed on your post, go to "edit" and make it known that "item A, B or C" is no longer available. Once they're all gone, delete the post.

Some notes:
I am making this a "sticky" just on the Turner's Forum however, I will post a message on the other forums to notify folks from all walks of SMC that this exchange is available to all members.

For those who weren't following Christopher's original idea thread, pretty much anything goes in terms of blanks, just as long as both parties are agreeable. Green blanks, dry ones, roughed out & dry, pen blanks and laminated ones are good. Heck, we even have folks on lasers who also turn and may want to trade some type of plastic materials for pen blanks with someone else who can send them more substantial wooden bowl blanks! If you have a green blank and someone else has a bunch of neat pen blanks, that can work as a trade, too. Don't necessarily restrict yourselves to a direct one-for-one.:) The most important thing here is to provide a way for folks to expand their horizons some and, even more so, to have fun with it! Let the trading begin!!! :D

John, I most certainly won't be the first to offer any blanks, I've got to leave for work now, *#@&%^. However, when I figure out how to resize the digital photo file size so I can post some pics, why, I have all sizes of blanks. Mostly red stain boxelder and maybe some figured maples. I also happen to know where there is an 8' maple log that's nearly 1/2 burl. Looks rather grotesque. I might be able to negotiate for some pieces. But maybe I won't want to trade them away........................:D

Kurt,
In a few weeks I'll be expanding my supply ... I live in Texas hill country (Johnson City - 50 miles north of San Antonio and 50 miles weat of Austin) In my work I travel all over south Texas and frequestly stop and pick up pieces of tree trunks that the State Hwy dept discards for burning at the hwys edge ... I get Oak, Cedar, Mesquite, etc. plus I live on a farm that is heavy with trees.
Let me know if your interested.

How about some hard maple. I'll post pics later. I'd have to cut a blank from a chunk of log and it would be round not square. (no band saw):(

I have a few (probably 10) cocobola turning "sticks" each about 2 feet long by 3/4" square, rough sawn not loinyed and planed ... from Mitch talcove of Tropical Exotic Hardwoods. These blanks are left from when I did pens (quit after I sold number 10,000). Will exchange for bowl or spindle stock ... looking for especially thick spindle stock ot highly figured 3x3, 4x4, 5x5, 6x6  . Blanks are in Indianapolis, IN.

You guys are funny ....:D
I just recently purchased walnut tree , limbs, trunk , and stump, been down about 3 years but the guy that sawed it up did not dry it properly, would be intrested in swap . Here in North Idaho we is mostly pineing away for something other than cedar. No toe jam but we do make a mean huckleberry jelly ................ and yes thanks for the advice on the yew wood I cleaned up my gouge and stole the vari amp off my shaper to slow down the lathe to a reasonable speed , it went much better. Additon of NOVA G3 also helped....Now wife happy. See, even 57 year old machinists can learn a thing or two...

Creekers,
My assignment from my beuatiful, talented and generous wife is to turn at least 50 Christmas Ornaments for her staff at the school and parish. She likes the Dick Sing style globe and finial style. I have been cutting scraps and stock into blanks and started practicing with homemade hollowing tools. I think I got the process down but I need to add a little variety to the materials. The globe blank needs to be 2.25 to 2.5 square and a 6 inch long piece will yield 2 globes. I have alot of curly maple, a little each of cherry, walnut and mahogany. If someone could add to my assortment I would be happy to trade platter blanks of walnut. I was fortunate enough to steal (really I purchased it at an auction but I am sure St. Peter is going to want to talk to me about this someday) an abundance of 2" thick rough sawn black walnut, dry and wide. Makes great platters. I'll band saw some rounds and ship them to someone who can help. I will cut to fit the capacity of your lathe. The better the help the wider the platter blanks I will trade.
