Here are some pic's of gent named Steve Hopkins and his gas (really propane) powered lathe. It's a slick item in that he powers it with a oil pull engine running on propane.. This was taken @ Johnson's Workbench - Charlotte, MI Wood Expo 2003..

He's also setup with DP & tredle grinder...

Spent about 3 bills on wood for my son's Futon project .. 1.57bf$ for poplar (figured it was good to learn on)... plus 2 sheets of good birch ply for the base under the mattress.. had a good time!

At least it's not the Steve Jenkins I know who frequently posts here. I've met him - he's much bigger than the gent in the photos - he could likely carry the lathe and the engine powering it to the truck by himself :p

I don't think he wears plaid or suspenders either.

Neat pictures, thanks for sharing. I just love old flat belt driven machinery. I saw a lathe of this type at an old gold mine in Grass Valley, CA with at least 15' between centers - looked like you could turn a telephone pole on it.

Dan,

Feeling just a bit froggy this evening :D

Like Dan Barber I love to see pictures of flat belt driven equipment using a driveshaft. Back in the '50's my father owned a dry cleaning plant that utilized a driveshaft and one 5 hp electric motor to operate all sorts of dry cleaning equipment.

Thanks for posting.

Howard

Looks like from the pic that the guy's name is Steve Hopkins. Just my observation, though.
