Well, I am slowly but surely finishing the cyclone. I am now looking into building a dust collector hood over the table saw blade. Preferably one that can serve double duty as a dust hood and blade guard.

Anyone know or have an interesting self do-able design?

For those of you with the shark guard, what do you think of the dust collection with it? I'm interested in a new guard solely for DC, the existing guard serves the protection need just fine.

FWIW, I've got a dust gorilla so I'll keep the 4" port open under the saw and the little 2.5" port on the shark guard open as well.

For those of you with the shark guard, what do you think of the dust collection with it? Tom,
It SUCKS... the dust right up ;) . I use the SG on my zip code saw and I think it does an excellent job of dust collection. I tested it recently cutting MDF and most of the dust was sucked right up.

Julio,

There are a number of sources for these guards and over arm support structures but many have pipes or ports too small on the over arm guard to support the needed airflow. I think you need at least 3.5” or larger going to that port unless you connect to a shop vacuum.

You might be able to buy a PSI replacement guard and modify it.

Steve Ehrich (steve.ehrich@eon-us.com) makes the Dust Be Gone custom over arm guard. He got a little advice from me on how to configure these to move ample air. There is a write up at http://www.onlinetoolreviews.com/reviews/dustbegone.htm

The Exaktor over arm guard is another I’ve followed fairly closely that also uses a 4” blade guard collection port. http://www.exaktortools.com/index2.htm

Thanks Bill! I will be hooking up the cyclone soon, its all assembled and mounted. I am waiting on the FARR filter Ive ordered and all I need now is to run the duct work(6" sewer lines) to the machines.

Heres a pic of the cyclone all mounted and ready! I am really pleased with the way it has turned out.

I prepared a detailed booklet of how I built my Overarm Dust Hood. If anyone is interested in checking it out, email me at khumnji@msn.com. You need to have Adobe Reader installed on your computer to open it. If you don't have Adobe Reader, you can download it for free from Adobe.com. The booklet is 19 pages and has a PDF file size of 540kb as shown below...
cheers, Jeff

Julio,

Looking good. Can't wait to hear how you like it once it is up and running.

Jeffrey,

If you would like for me to share a link on my Ducting pages, hoods area or the links page I would be happy to do so.

Julio, Sam Blasco designed and built the most innovative overhead blade guard/DC hood for his table saw I have ever seen. He built and used this in his shop when he still lived in Fla, before he moved to Austin and became associated with MiniMax. I think that all the detail pics are probably still in the pics section of the "Members Pics" of the MiniMax forum site, and would probably give you some great ideas even if you didn't use his complete design.

Good Luck.
