Our visiting daughter was a bit upset with me after seeing the bowl I made for her Mom so, I decided to chuck up something a bit smaller and hopefully, a bit less fragile for the trip back to Florida. I pulled a chunk of Maple from a batch of wood I received from John Hart, and chucked it up. "Just a piece of regular Hard Maple", or so I thought! Out from the depths emerged this piece. Wonderful flames, a bit of curl and an inclusion, which even has some beautiful red to it! :) 5-1/2 x 3" with a pretty consistent wall thickness of @3/32. I tried something a bit different for the finish. I threw together some Velvit Oil and shellac, which really helped pop the characteristics of the wood. Buffed on the Beall. Nothing spectacular to the form but, the wood is gorgeous! :) She hasn't seen it yet, though I hope she likes it. Thanks for taking a peek and critiques are always welcome! :)

Wow John, that's a beauty. Your daughter is going to think you're a genius... just grabbing a chunk of wood out of a pile and having it come out like that.

I like this form. I think I am correct in saying it reminds me of the calibash bowl form. It reminds me of a form I have seen from Hawaii. The wood speaks for itself.

John: You have a knack of finding wood like that, but the best thing is that you REALLY know how to bring out the beauty!
