The curl in this Walnut is real faint, so I was trying a form to hopefully capture some of it. This pretty much stretched my abilities with the Sorby Hollowmaster. It's 10.25 x 2.5 and about 1/4" thick with an ebonized cherry collar. I'll use real ebony when I get better at this, but it's a bit expensive to use on my stuff as of yet. Oh yea, it's finished with Waterlux... not buffed yet.

Ernie, this is absolutely a great HF. I love the form and the wood.:) :) Would have been worth the ebony :) :)

Lovely form. How tough is it to hollow something that short?

Fantastic shape! I've got a couple pieces of pottery that shape, but haven't tried turning anything like it yet.

Not buffed yet?!? Good thing you took the pictures now: it'll be way too shiny to photograph afterward. :D

So Ernie, if I may, how much better do you have to get? I'm no expert, but it looks pretty much flawless to me. I love it! Great work!

Beautiful Ernie!
Awesome piece of Walnut and a great form to show it off!
IMO that ebonized Cherry looks better than the Gabon ebony I have!

WOW! That is just that..WOW! I love the shap, who doesn't like walnut and the finish is exquisite! Watelux huh. That is an tung oil finish right? Does it take as long as tung oil to dry? I wonder if it would work on pens.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. They sure make one feel pretty darn good.

Henry, getting to the inside perimeter can be a wild ride if you are not ready for it with the tool I have, so you have to brace yourself pretty good before you touch the wood. I keep it sharp very sharp too which helps that transition from air to wood.

Corey, the Waterlux has dryers in it, so in 24 hrs you apply a second coat. I scrubbed it down with 0000 steel wool pretty hard between coats and it didn't gum up. I put 4 coats on it so it does take much longer than lacquer, but I wanted to try it on this walnut to see if I could bring that curl out a little more.

That is really beautiful Ernie! Your cherry fooled me, thought it was Ebony.

There is nothing wrong with that work Ernie and if you can ebonize cherry to look that much like Ebony. Save the money. I bought some and it doesn't look near as nice as you ebonizing job.;)

Again Ernie, beautiful job.:)
