Finally installed the oak bookcases I have been working on today. Been working on them for about six weeks in between business trips. The woman I made them for wanted floor to ceiling, wall to wall bookcases 14 inches deep. I designed them with fixed shelves both for stability and looks. The two center sections have two fixed shelves, other two sections have one fixed shelf. All the flat surfaces were plywood - 3/4" for sides and shelves, 1/4" for backs. Face frames and molding were made from 7/8" oak (didn't want to plane it any thinner). All the molding was made using a router table and molding head on table saw. They were stained with Minwax Red Oak stain to match her existing wood work. The base molding is the original that was already in place. Top coat is wipe on poly Arm-R-Seal satin from General Finishes. Took about 4.5 hours plus two trips for delivery to finish the installation. Please comment on design. Always trying to improve.

All in all, a very nice job. I'm not fond of the look of the plywood back but that won't matter much when it is loaded with books. To me, the cloud lifts look a bit heavy - the thicker portion should have been either narrower or longer.

john, they look good. the only thing i`d suggest is wraping the crown around the corbles. you`d be supprised at the difference it makes...02 tod

Well done! I especially like the secret passage in the wall behind the bookshelves.

Thanks for the comments. As far as wrapping the crown molding around the corbels, I had already put more into it than the customer was expecting. Yes, it would have looked better, but just couldn't justify the extra work. Next time I will include that in the quote, if there is a next time. Getting pretty busy with my day job.
