Here is another big leaf maple box about 2 1/2" tall and 2 1/2" in diameter. The curl in this piece of wood is incredible. There is so much more than I am able to photograph.

Mike.............I can't believe the amount of beauty you seem to expose!

Question?........Do you rough turn your boxes wet.......and let them dry or are you turning dry wood?

If you're wet turning and letting them dry could you give some detail about the procedure you use?

Another beautiful box!

That is sweet, the wood is beautiful Mike! Awesome.

Ken, look back to last weekends posts and I believe he answered your question on the two boxes he made then.

Thank you for the kind comments.

Ken, yes and no. Some woods come to me kiln dried and they are ready to turn as is. Some come air dried or partially air dried. Those I rough turn to be on the safe side and soak in alcohol before putting them in the hot water heater closet to dry more completely. When I rough turn them I try to get down to about 3/8" and just sink them in the alcohol for a day. Tape them end to end with the turned cavities exposed and let them dry for a good long while, even more in the closet where it is warm. Seems to be working.

Big Mike,
As a child I read a book by Conrad Richter, The Light in the Forest. Seeing this dapper yet modest box presented here, I must ask if The Light in the Wood… might not have been a more appropriate thread title?

Totally awesome box in all ways!!!

Beautiful, as always, Mike! You didn't get the title of "Box Master" for nuthin'!!! :D Wonderful curl to the wood, too but, in the end, it takes your skill to really bring it out. Great job! :)

Yes Corey,
The story is indeed that of a “white boy” raised by native americans. A journey undertaken by far too few, in my opinion.

The "Light in the Wood" is the Creator's doing. My hope is to be able to display it in such a way that others can enjoy it.

Thank you for the nice comments.
