Here is my second attempt at turning a box in this rosewood called Bois de rose aka Madagascar rosewood. I must say it turns and finishes like a dream even if it is a little dusty during the turning process.

This box is 2 3/4" tall and 2 3/4" in diameter.

It is hard to see in the pictures but I attempted to frame the raised lid portion with a groove that was wire burned. It shows up well in person but not in the pictures.

Great looking turning.

I hope you were wearing good dust protection. I found out about rosewood the hard way a few years ago.

Big Mike,
I have been following your posts and I have noted variations of lid detailing and form. To me, your recent work has excelled at its uppermost levels.

Sharing with you honestly Mike, I have been becoming uncomfortable with the bases upon which these highly developed lids rest. I am sensing an instability in the relation of the upper and lower portions of your vessels. Logos vs. Mythos?

Frank, they are more stable than they appear as the base of the box is usually at the minimum 1/2 the diameter.

A while back a guy asked me on another forum if these boxes served any purpose or were they just dust collectors? I told him that they were functional boxes but if someone chose to make them an object of beauty that sat around and collected dust I would be pleased as well.

I guess they are more decorative than functional. My wife shudders at the mere mention of using one to put something in.....:o :D

Big Mike,
As usual an exceptonal box. I absolutely love the very, very, subtle flare that you get at the top of the top. I wish I were able to attend one of your classes but Indiana (the state note the town) is a bit far for me at this time.

I really enjoy seeing your boxes.

Blake, thank you for your nice comment. I am flattered that you would like to attend my class. You would be most welcome.

It's a real beauty Mike. I agree....I wouldn't use the box....just look at it. I love how you keep the grain flowing uninterupted. A very pretty piece.:)
