Nice looking set, Tim! Just a thought---did you get the idea for the offset turning of the knights' necks from the ShopSmith website?

Thanks---I thought that knight looked familiar. I remember my father making these something like 25 years ago... I think he used maple and padauk. I don't believe he made more than like two or three sets, one of which was a gift for my uncle.

Gadzooks, I can't wait to get the money together for my lathe---I'm thinking about doing chess pieces as well, and am considering larger diameter pieces. I was wondering how I was going to make a chessboard without any real flatwork equipment other than a handsaw and miter box, but then I realized that I can most likely get some good veneers that would make for some interesting possibilites for alternate boards.
