This example of 3D relief carving can be bent, morphed, smoothed etc and then cnc machined. Have 8 more examples at link below to web site. The math modeling and point cloud processing can be applied to flat or curved surface. 3D cnc carving on flat or curved surface now has no boundaries in design or machining. Technology , math and old craftsmanship are great tools of the trade. Studio

Any nice hard short tight grained wood. Maple, cherry, ebony, teak & most of the south american exotics.
Probably Oak isn't the best.

Those lines almost beg for a hand carver. Mind if I steal that pattern? It's quite nice.
