This nice little bowl leapt out of one ugly piece of twisted gnarly wood.

I put a rim on it, just for fun, and I finished it with wax, after sanding it to #400.

38662
I really like the grain on this one

38663
The coloring is neat too!

Signed and ready for approval!

It is Sakura, and only big enough for a good sized hand full of M&Ms :D

I very much like this one!

Cheers!

Nice little bowl, Stu. It sorta resembles oak doesn't it. Looks like you are having fun and when the DVR gets there the fun will increase. :D

It does kind of look like Oak, but the grain is closed, not open like Oak.

Hard as nails too!

Cheers!

Do I see an m&m bowl contest starting?

That one would be a strong contender.

Excellent Stu, that is a good one for sure. That would be perfect for Andy's Ice Cream, when he is on a diet!

Thanks guys, I really like it, and my wife really, REALLY likes it, thus, it is a hit!

I got the Tim Skilton sanding pad set from Lee Valley....

http://www.leevalley.com/images/item/woodworking/sandingshaping/68z2531s1.jpg

I got the smaller one, with sandpaper #80, #120, #180, #220, #400 (they don't have any #320.. ).

Boy does this system work well, on the lathe, I did not find too much of an advantage, but off the lathe, for doing the bottom etc, boy, it just rocks! :D

I finished it with a buffing wheel and the Liberon wax stick I got....

http://www.leevalley.com/images/item/woodworking/turning/53z0201s1.jpg

I could not apply it on the lathe, so I put some on the buffing wheel and appllied it that way, worked fine, the pics don't do the wood justice, amazing what can be lurking inside the worst piece of firewood :D

Cheers!

Hey, Stu.
Those little sanding discs can be expensive depending on where you buy them. I found my best deal from Packards. You might want to consider buying in bulk.

One of the nice features of the DVR is the reverse mode. It really helped me when I had some nasty endgrain that didn't want to cooperate. Reverse sanding and those little discs, that is.

Thanks for the info George.

I'm just trying this out, so I bought two packs of each grit, but I can see your point, and if I find that I'm going through a lot of them, then I'll buy a big bag or box for sure.

Actually, with the DVR, I expect to do a lot less sanding, as I should be able to get a smoother cut.

Cheers!

Gnarley is VERY GOOD, Stu. What you have there testifies to that fact. You skill is showing, too!

Good looking wood Stu. The bowl design and wood together makes for a winner. I wish I could have seen a profile picture, what was the size of it, and what finish did you use?

Glen, it is just a little one, maybe 3" across, less than 2" high?

I sanded it down to #400, and then loaded up a buffing wheel with the Liberon wax, turned out really nice.

Cheers!

Thanks Ken.

My eldest daughter has decided she wants it for her birthday (May 23rd) but my wife likes it too, I guess I'll have to make some more :D
