Just bought this on Ebay. It was listed only hours ago with a buy-it-now price of $325 so I jumped on it. Even if I have to do a fair amount of work, I'm pretty sure I got a steal. Just have to figure out how to get it home. Hopefully I can make arrangements to pick it up this weekend.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Yeah, I'd bet that's a step or two above the Jet Mini. Nice snag, Matt.

Another update. I found the lathe listed as a new model in a 1957 catalog on the owwm.com site. The speed is ifinitely variable between 340 and 3200. Has the 1"x8TPI threads I hoped for, 12" swing over the ways, 38" between centers. It can turn a 16.5" diameter x 3-1/2" piece over the gap. Also has 48 index stops. This is more lathe than I dreamed of. :D :D :D

Be wary of that gap. Very pesky and frustrating critter.

So I need a recording of the woman in London "Mind the gap. Mind the gap...." (those who've been know what I mean.)

Saw your earlier post and was going to suggest looking at one of these older Deltas. Looked at my watch for the first time (while eating my breakfast) and realized I had to get out the door fast. I had overslept and didn't realize it. I was thinking that one of these would meet your needs perfectly. Obviously I was correct. :)

And I think you did good on the price too! I looked at these when I was looking and they were on my list. I just found the J-Line first.

Great score Matt. I have the same model except mine is a Rockwell/Delta. You will be pleased. If you have any questions feel free to pm me and I'll try and help. I bought mine on ebay as well except I had to drive 1100 miles to pick mine up:eek:

I'll try to remember to stop and take pictures during the restoration. Its hard to remember some times in the excitement to get stuff done.

I got a few more details from the seller. The motor is 3/4 HP which is probably a little light, so I'll have to keep an eye out for an eventual replacement. He think he has a faceplate for it. I'll know more on Friday afternoon when I pick it up.

Matt, take lots of pics, to document the process, but also so you can figure out where that little widget went, and which was the top of the widget...........yes, I'm speaking from experiance here (mainly motorcycles) the before pics and the during pics can be REAL lifesavers!! :D

Cheers!

Matt, that's a darned good deal - the swing arm on the banjo alone is worth $75-$100. RE: the gap - Delta made a filler piece that bolted in and eliminated the gap. I've yet to see one for sale, even on Ebay, but if you're lucky you might find one. I do know somebody that is working on producing reproductions of that piece as well as many other old Delta parts, so if you're interested and willing to wait, it's an issue you can deal with. Finally, I may have a motor laying around that will work for you - ask me at the meeting tomorrow.

Thanks Dave! I already was planning on talking to you and Steve tomorrow for advise. This is pretty similar to yours, isn't it?

Steve Ash
05-17-2006, 9:23 PM
Matt, if Dave isn't able to help you out with a motor there is a guy here in Charlotte that has a whole shop full of rebuilts and new ones in many brands and flavors. When I asked him about a motor for a friend he said all needs to know is rpm and type of frame you need.

Matt Meiser

Question on the motor: Are you guys thinking the motor that is included (3/4 HP, 1800RPM, single phase Baldor) is too small? In '57, Delta was only offering this lathe with a 1/2HP or 3/4HP 1800RPM motor.

I am a gearhead with a Chevelle SS putting out close to 450 horses...I always say you can never have enough horsepower...:D

Blasphemy!!

I'd run what you brung and see how it works, if it is not enough power, you can upgrade later.

I know that I was looking to upgrade the motor on Big Blue, my resaw bandsaw, but I've not been able to bog that motor while resawing, so why spend the money?

Cheers!

That was my original thinking, but these guys had me worried. But then neither of them drives a Ford either.

Yep Matt, it's the same as the one I finished up last month. While I'm a big believer in the "no such thing as too much power" theory, the 3/4hp motor is pretty standard for those lathes and likely more than adequate. If you want to go the 3-phase/vfd route, you'll want something a little bigger to compensate for the loss of torque when running at slower speeds.
