I've been slacking off posting on the sawmill creek forum lately and I thought I might ought to get back in the habit again. Been sorta busy though and haven't had a lot of time lately for anything other than work. Since I last checked in I have made a lot of sawdust, bought a new camper and boat, married off my daughter and got this kitchen finished for a customer.

I ain't wild about their color choice for the walls but it does look pretty cool. I would quickly get tired of it though over the long haul. The cabinets are made of solid maple and stained with lockwood dark maple water based dye stain, finished with semi-gloss gemni pre cat lacquer. Of course the usual plywoods are also incorporated in the construction. Cabinet interiors are obechie and white melamine with baltic birch drawers. Drawer glides are full extension ball bearing glides from KV.

Jim, how is the solid surface material secured to the cabs? What thought process did you go through in the design for securing the soilid surface material? what design considerations were considered for the weight?

Forgot to mention, the design and execution look great.

Jim,

I agree with you on the color choices for the walls, but the cabinets sure look nice. Job well done!

I, too, would soon tire of the color combination. It really looks good in a photo, but I can't imagine "living" with it. Just too dark for my preferences. I'm also interested in your answers to the questions posed by Dan. This is another kitchen you should be proud of.

Well actually Dan, I didn't get to help much with that. When I began construction of the kitchen they were going to be using corian. When I had the boxes installed I learned when the slate guy showed up to measure that they were going to use slate. Sorta took me by surprise.

However the way I build a base cabinet with the kick frame underneath the entire length of the box there should not be any problem with weight distribution. The boxes also have a 1x10 in the back to fasten the drawer glides and screwed to the wall studs.

The solid surface material is mounted to the cabinets using silicone caulking as an adhesive as applied by the guy who put that in. That is also the way that I have put in poured marble countertops and sink tops. I suppose that is an acceptable method???

Fantastic! Love the look. I would prefer lighter cabinets, but the customer gets what they want. Keep it up.

Good to see you dropping by for a visit, Jim. Hadn't seen much of you or your work lately, but I guess I understand why. Real nice work. Like you, the color scheme isn't necessarily my preference, but the cabinet work looks impeccable.

I have been dropping in nearly everyday trying to keep up with all my good buddies here at SMC but I have been a bit on the busy side trying to keep the full time job and the cabinet shop running. Marrying off my daughter has been keeping me plenty busy too.

I have to check in here daily but keyboard time has been lacking. I guess I'll have to try and do better.

Thanks to the rest of you for your kind replies to the post.

Nice cabinets Jim! Tastes for colors is very subjective! My youngest son and his wife had that same color and others in their previous home that I didn't appreciate but .........? They just relocated to Houston and bought another home. He's remodeling the kitchen as we type.

My wife tried to talk me out of posting the cabinets on the net due to the color on the walls. I just couldn't resist though.:D

I think they match pretty good.

Looks a lot better than a set I did a few years back.
Red oak cabs, golden oak stain.
Violet, purple colored counter tops:rolleyes:

And----------------Dark Green walls:eek:

But thats what the customer wanted, and she paid like clockwork.:)

That really is a mix of colors for sure Steve. I guess it is all just paint and stain and can be done over in years to come. The most important thing is like your customer that paid like clockwork. I really enjoyed working for these people. I watched as both of them completed high school here and then advanced into adult like after college. Great couple, easy to work for and communicated what they wanted to a tee. I wish all my customers were as forthcoming. I'd love to do it all again someday.

Jim, the cabinets are gorgeous. I actually like the dark cabinets. Not sure that I would pair it with the red, but I bet the picture makes the color look worse and it is nicer in natural light.

I love the design of the pennisula also. Great job. Keep up the good work.

Jim-
Very nice design and execution on the cabinets.
Would you be offended if I ask how much this job ran?
And about how many hours you had into the project?

Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Dave, I sent you a PM on the price but as far as the hours go I don't know for sure. I still work part time as a cabinetmaker and full time as a teacher so my time is often put in in short spells in the evening and on the weekends. I can tell you I started the job the first week in Jan of 06 and completed the installation in mid March plus put out 6 sets of raised panel doors for other customers. I was a busy beaver during that time, not that busy now though. Hours and hours and plenty of them, but I enjoyed every one.
