Well an nice long weekend has come and gone. Really enjoyed the much needed three days off. So what were you up to over this weekend.?

I spent some time in the shop this weekend and worked hard at beginning this custom CD Corner Cabinet for a fellow at work. This is the one that will be getting the musical note inlays as well as the musical staff inlay and LOML wants me to add a Bass Cleft symbol to the works as well. I may need to get with Bob Lasley on this one since he is one of the master inlay dudes around here. ;) I have NEVER done this kind of inlay work before and I am stressing pretty heavily over it all. I have most of the cabinet parts cut out and have performed an initial dry fit of the pieces. LOML and I glued up each half of the -5-1/2" backbone structure that will provide a good portion of the support for the overall cabinet. This cabinet will hold right at 918 CD's and this guy I am making it for already has nearly 700 CD's in his existing collection. To top all that off....he alphabetizes every CD in his collection!!!! He currently has 4 wire frame racks scattered about his living room and he want a cabinet to hold all of the existing CD's and allow room for about 200 more CD's.

I did learn one thing out of this project so far....I will not be buying any more 3/4" Oak plywood from the local Lowes store any more. This stuff is very poorly made and the Oak veneer is very inconsitent and almost paper thin is most spots. Needless to say, I will be looking up a supplier for cabinet shops in Little Rock, AR for my next requirements for good quality hardwood plywood.........live and learn.

Had a very nice visit with Terry Hatfield, the LOHL and Jr LOHL today and fed them BBQ chicken and fixin's before their road trip back home from Peyton's (spelling?) football game today. CONGRATS to Peyton and the whole Springdale football team for kicking butt today!!!!!

So what did YOU do over the long weekend...provided you got to have one that is.?

Best of Weeks........

Well it was a very nice long weekend wasn't it? I got a lot done actually. Finished rubbing out the tea table I was working on. Cut up a million thin strips for the next round of cutting boards. Found a score on cherry and walnut - all the 4/4 I want at $2/bf - 8",10",12" wide boards! Filled up the truck, going back again this weekend to fill up my Dad's garage as well.

Shot a couple of rounds of trap and one long round of sporting clays.

Rode, ran, and swam every day. Total bike mileage for the three day weekend 186.

Mrs. Schwingding made her second apple pie - and it was darn good! Ate dinner Saturday at the Milton Inn - where we had our wedding reception. Couple of long walks in the woods with the Mrs. and the dogs. Was really a nice long weekend.

Scored some more wood for my lathe, Walnut, Pecan and Spalted Beach. Oh boy I didn't need anymore but couldn't resist. Finished spraying the door prize I will be bringing to Hatfield's this weekend. Hey Dennis, have you been practicing your scrolling? I am bringing Big Blue with me and there will be a test.

It was a productive weekend as I completed all the remaining doors, drawer fronts, false doors and false drawer fronts for the kitchen renovation as well as got the color coats of finish on them. I should get a couple of clear coats on them this week and be ready to install everything on the weekend. I also got the remaining wainscot up as well as some trim. Last Friday, I build the pull-out spice rack shown below. Although it's not as elegant (or large) as Byron's "spicy designs", it will work well for our needs.

The best news...the soapstone counter tops go in this afternoon! That's the last "major" thing that needs done. All the rest is detail work. Life is good... :D

Spent the weekend getting TLOML's new digs at URI arranged. She has succeeded in her life long goal of being a professor teaching young nurses her profession!

So...what's the big deal besides her accomplishment? Can you hear retirement coming for this soon to be house husband, dog walking, and shop rat?

Dennis,

I'm actually the master of outlay, rather than inlay. ;)

I had a great weekend. It rained all weekend, so there was no yardwork. Completed the varnishing on the knockdown bookcase on Sunday. Spent some time yesterday getting material milled for demos at the BBQ this weekend.

Had the pleasure of spending time with all of my kids and grandkids, which was the best part of the weekend.

Have a great week,
Bob

We had a really nice visit Dennis. Thanks for feeding us. See you Friday.

BTW...correct spelling is Payton. :D

Weekend football results..........

Springdale 62

Pulaski Academy 0

48 to 0 at the half. We would have scored 100 if it wasn't pouring rain.

After being absent from the shop and ww internet boards for more time than i want to mention, i had a great weekend. I built (finally) a decent outfeed table for the ts, turned my 30" bies fence into roughly a 40" fence. I added a longer extension table for the fence, hung a router under the table, and built an auxilliary fence for the new router table. Oh yeah, and yesterday i cooked some excellent pork bbq. My folks spent the day with us, and as Daddy's health is not the best, any time we get to spend a whole day with them is just golden.

For the last three weeks my back had been bothering me so shop time was limited. Finally this long weekend it was well enough to get some stuff done. I went to work on Saturday for a few hours while no one was around and blanked out 24 marking knife blades on the surface grinder using O1 tool steel. Sunday and Monday I spent in the shop at home prepping poplar stock and beginning work on a new wall rack for my bench room to hold my selection of hand planes and spokeshaves. The rough work was done with fork tailed devils along with the 46 dados, but all the rest is being done with hand tools. I figure I should be done in a coupla weeks if I can continue to get shop time, but this weekend is the Live Free or Die old hand tools auction and flea market so I guess you all know where I'll be.

1. Spent the day visting the inlaws on Saturday.
2. Got home to a flooded shop caused by leaky pipe from the sump pump. Stayed up til 2:30 am breaking into sheetrock to fix the problem.
3. Woke up the 1st thing next morning to help our neighbor clean up her flooded basement after getting 10 inches of rain. (Husband in Kuwait)
4. Took a nap then went to my 1st Fantasy Football draft.
5. Woke up the next day and went golfing for only the 2nd time this year.
6. Went to my second Fantasy Football draft.
7. Spent the evening with the family.

Here is the list of things I didn't get done.
1. I was suppose to build a play table for my daughter.
2. I wanted to build a planer stand over my table saw extension wing.

Even thought I didn't get any honeydo's done, it was still a good weekend.

Next weekend, its off to the Central States BBQ at Terry's House.

for lacquer. I moved the changing station a lot farther than I thought I would. I spent about 2 hours last night doing the last of the 320 sanding. I have to do a bunch of running around with the LOML today but I hope to start the lacquer late to today or tomorrow for sure. The next and last piece of this trilogy is the crib.

Friday: At the insistance of my family, took my B-day off for a nice extended weekend. Spent the first part of the day at my local sawmill and picked up some nice Maple, Cherry & Walnut all at $2.00 bd/ft! Packed up a truckload of "stuff" and too it to St. Vinie's donation store. Rest of the day: shop time! Sat.: Some finish work on a couple keepsake boxes, trip to "The City" with LOML for Taste of Madison. Ate too much, came home and visited a bit with step-daughter and grandkids. Sun.: Woke up to septic backup! Call honeywagon dude (neighbor), pump tank and clear line in house. All better. Go to town for brake parts and do brake job on my main commuter. MORE shop time! Started on display cabinet for wood gallery to house turned pens and such. 'Nuther coat of finish on boxes. Tuned up the old Ryobi planer. (Got rid of 95% of the snipe!) Mon.: Re-routed some of the DC lines, tune-up TS, more work on display case and finish rub-down and final coat boxes. All in all, a good weekend! Have a great week, all!

Jim, Which drawer guides are you using?

Jim, Which drawer guides are you using?

The top drawers are using Accuride center/bottom mount ball-bearing guides and the larger drawers are using full-extension side-mounts since these drawers may have heavy cookware and appliances residing in them. Two of the latter are Accurides that I had "in stock" already and two are K&V that I got a good price on from the same folks I bought my Deltana hinges from. (Spokane Hardware DBA The Hardware Hut (http://www.thehardwarehut.com/) )

Coincidently, my drawer boxes just arrived...in order to save time on this project, I had them made up by a firm that a cabinetmaker neighbor/friend uses. While I really, really, really prefer to make stuff like this myself...the time I'm saving by buying all these drawer boxes is significant enought to justify the cost. To save a little, I had them shipped knocked down, but sanding the components gluing them up and spraying on the lacquer isn't going to take all that much time. They are nice dovetailed maple, too. Preparing the stock, especially for the larger drawers, dovetailing and cutting the dados, etc, would have taken a whole weekend by itself.
