Hello Everyone,

It has been a while since my last update on my parents kitchen. There was wood show season, a short winter vacation, waiting for glass, finishing and a number of other hold ups, but things are almost done. Really, the only thing left is the kick plate.

Here are how things stand now,

Corner cupboard,

There will be a lamp under the raised cabinet, like the other corner but when I went to install it yesterday, I could not find the two clips that hold it in.

From the main hall,

A nice shot of a corner with the lamp on (the one I *could* find clips for),

Around the fridge,

The cupboard to the left of the fridge is a Lee Valley pull out "larder" unit, what looks like two doors simply pull out as one. Above that I made just one door that looks like two. I don't see that cupboard being used very much, and two small doors with a center face frame stile would have made it impossible to get into.

Underneath the microwave,

This was made to look like a cabinet door with a drawer above it, but it opens to a lazy susan. This was where the sink was to go, but while the cabinets were being installed, Mom changed her (with some persuasion) to put the sink under the window.

Under the sink,

What look like two drawers, open down to hold sink stuff.

Detail shot of drawers between sink and stove,

Mom wanted deep drawers for her pots and pans. This are solid hard maple drawers, hand dovetailed.

This is only my second kitchen. My first was for my sister, and it was *much* less involved (paint grade, ply drawers, etc.). Once this is done, I will start working on a new kitchen for where I live. We plan on selling our current house soon and it much smaller than my folks, so won't be anything on a scale like this.

David,

Fantastic work!

I plan to redo my kitchen in the next couple years and have a load of maple to use for it.

How many board feet of maple did you use for this kitchen?

Amazing work David. Having just completed a kitchen job, I know not only how much work is involved but the know-how it takes to execute it. I consider cabinets to be "furniture for the kitchen" and should be built not unlike any other piece you would find elsewhere in the home. Your craftsmanship displayed in these pictures lend me to think you believe along the same lines. All the extras packed in here - the pull out pantry, pots and pans drawers, corner cabinets....all are a testament to your talent! Bravo David - I am indeed impressed but more importantly, I am sure your parents are.....and more than jus a little proud!

Outstanding!! Outstanding!! Outstanding!!! :D :D :D

(I think you need a few more drill/drivers, however...)

Beautiful work, David. Thanks for sharing. The contrast between the cabinets made from maple and the black countertop looks fantastic.
I’d seriously think about putting together a complete documentation of the building process. It would certainly become a bestseller.
BTW, is there any Makita cordless tool you don’t own yet?:D ;)

Regards,

Christian

Great job, David. Looks amazing in pictures, probably even better in person. My favorite part is the corner cabinet. Your parents will be proud of you and their kitchen.

Great job, David. I went back and looked at all the previous threads you listed (thanks for the listing, BTW). I see you solved the crown problems by not putting crown on the straight runs and only on the taller ends/corners. Looks great and an inspired solution!

Your lowers have legs. Did you use the Blum legs? How do you like them?

I also see the time stamps indicate you have been working on this for almost two years! You have the most UNDERSTANDING parents in the world! :) I'm about to embark on a redo of our kitchen and LOML has extracted a promise from me to be done by Thanksgiving (end of Nov. for you non-US readers).

One other thing...
The base corner doesn't come to a right angle but is more like an upper with a diagonal corner. I've always wondered why this is not the standard way to do it. I'm thinking about doing it that way in my (our :) ) kitchen. How wide is the opening? Would you do it that way again?

Once again, GREAT JOB!

David,

Great job! I'm sure that your parents are very happy.

Question - what would you estimate as your total material and tooling cost to do the entire job? We're looking at a new kitchen and it'd be of a similar magnitude as yours.

Incredible work! Not that you could figure this exactly, but I wonder by how much that has increased the value of the house.
