This is some of my favorite local wood, Gambel Oak (scrub oak). It's from a small tree that was torn out a few months ago on a home construction site. I turned it, sprayed some sanding sealer on it and took the picture. Within a couple days this will probably crack from the edge into the pith from both ends. I've got another one like it that's soaking in DNA and when I get it out I'm going to give it the epoxy manhatten treatment to see if I can get one of these that doesn't self destruct.
It's 7 1/2" x 6 1/2" x 4" tall.

That is really a striking bowl. I sure hope it doesn't crack up on you, that would be a shame. Nice work Curt!

Well Curt, you did good on it. It's pretty and I like the figure in this piece. I really hope it stays together for ya. Most any oak I've ever turned usually cracks up really bad and it becomes firewood. I hope yours stays together.

Curt,
Seeing the heart of that tree revealed from within the context of the tree’s bark is very moving.

I’m now regretting the many years I heated with wood. Even then while loading the stove, I often stopped and saved chunks of firewood from fiery consumption because they were just too beautiful to let go of.

Good eye Curt, and very nice turning.

Thanks,
Frank
