I'm not sure if this is a wood gloat or not......

I bought some rough curly maple today and found that it was mineral stained once I planed it down. The figure is impressive though....

I got something like 80bf for $230, and it's all this curly. Really nice stuff, but not sure if the color is a downer or not... Any opinions?

What causes this, anyhow?

Adam,

For my money, it's a keeper. If fact, if you don't like it..........

All the best. Dave.

Bummer. I guess I could be persuaded to take some of it off your hands if you decide to get rid of it.;)

If you really hate it...send it to me.

I love wood like that. I think it is character rather than a defect. Like they say in the computer business: "that's not a bug, that's a feature!"

Drop dead gorgeous!

Though I am now X far in line, if you don't like it...

Take care, Mike

nice curl, but to be honest, I would wish it was more of a true cream color. Not sure what causes the mineral stain. I have sawn soft maple that had dark heart wood and that will also detract from the curl.

best wishes

About a year ago I got 200 bf ($1 bf) of similar stuff from a guy with a portable mill in his back yard. Mine had less curl and was many shades of red. I made this from it:

The stats say about 3% of maple is curly, and I've never seen any numbers on mineral stained, so this is a real hen's tooth. The guy I got mine from says he's found it once before - it seems to happen in excessively wet areas, and the coloration is due to prevalent ground water minerals.

Hey Mike, that project deserves its own thread.

If I found a stash like that at that price I'd buy every stick he had!

I was wondering if it took on the "black" stain after it was cut. Red Oak sawed in the summer, when the humidty is high" and dead stacked will turn black throughout the whole board after just a short period of time. All of your sawmill yards are quick to get it stickered. Do you know any details about your lumber, as to when it was cut and when it was stickered?
